How the hours are calculated

We subtract the start time from the end time, then take off the unpaid break. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift crossed midnight, so we add 24 hours before subtracting.

Example: 8:30 AM to 5:15 PM is 8 hours 45 minutes. With a 30 minute lunch, that is 8 hours 15 minutes, or 8.25 hours.

Converting minutes to decimal hours

Payroll systems multiply your rate by decimal hours, so 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75. Divide the minutes by 60 to convert any value: 20 minutes is 20 ÷ 60 = 0.33 hours.

Questions

How do I calculate hours worked with a lunch break?

Subtract the start time from the end time and then subtract the length of the unpaid break. A 9:00 to 17:00 shift with a 30 minute break is 7.5 hours.

How are overnight shifts calculated?

When the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift ended the next day. A 22:00 to 06:00 shift is 8 hours. The calculator does this automatically.

Are paid breaks taken off?

No. Only enter breaks you are not paid for. Short paid rest breaks stay inside your hours.

What is 7 hours and 45 minutes in decimal?

7.75 hours. Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the full hours.
