How PTO accrual works
With accrual, paid time off builds up over the year instead of arriving all at once. Divide the yearly PTO in hours by the number of paychecks: 15 days of 8 hours paid every two weeks is 120 ÷ 26 = 4.62 hours per paycheck.
Some employers, and many sick leave laws, use hours worked instead: for example 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. 1,040 hours of work then earn about 34.7 hours.
Keeping track of PTO
The tracker subtracts vacation days from your allowance plus any days carried over from last year. Sick days are listed but not deducted, because many employers keep them separate. Change the type to match your policy.
Questions
How do I calculate PTO per paycheck?
Convert the yearly PTO to hours and divide by the number of paychecks in a year: 52 for weekly, 26 for every two weeks, 24 for twice a month and 12 for monthly pay.
What does PTO stand for?
Paid time off. It is the time you are paid for while not working, such as vacation, sick days and personal days. Some employers combine them in one PTO bank.
Is unused PTO carried over?
It depends on your employer's policy and on state law. Some allow a full or capped carryover, some pay it out and some use a use-it-or-lose-it rule. Enter any carried-over days in the tracker.
