The overtime formula

Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × multiplier. Regular pay = regular hours × hourly rate. The total is the two added together.

Example: 46 hours at $18 with overtime after 40. That is 40 regular hours ($720) and 6 overtime hours at $27 ($162), $882 in total.

Time and a half and double time

Time and a half means 1.5 times the normal rate. Double time means 2 times the rate and is often used for holidays or very long days. Enter double time hours separately if you have them; they are not counted again as overtime.

Questions

What is time and a half for $20 an hour?

$30 an hour. Multiply the hourly rate by 1.5.

After how many hours does overtime start?

Many employers use 40 hours a week, and some places also count hours over 8 in a day. Check your contract or local rules and set the threshold to match.

How do I calculate overtime for a salaried job?

Convert the salary to an hourly rate first: weekly salary divided by the hours it covers. Then use that rate here.
